The Live Music Industry Loves a Myth
It trades on stories about heads being bitten off bats, brown M&Ms being removed from the rider, or bands driving hundreds of miles to a gig only to be told that they aren’t on the bill, threatening to smash the place up unless they get on stage, being allowed to play four songs, getting signed on the spot, and going on to sell 70 million albums.
Inevitably, it’s only ever the promoter that has all the information and knows the truth.
And as the live music industry has grown in both size and complexity it has become harder and harder to keep track of that information and use it in the right way.
30 years ago, a diary may have been enough to book, plan, and sell gigs.
There isn’t a lot of information, pictured above, in promoter Geoff Ellis’s diary for one of those myth making nights at King Tut’s in Glasgow, although the late addition of Oasis to the bill (and the number of exclamation marks) could be a clue to how it went down.
Pencils, Pounds, & Performance
However, for 2019 and beyond, a live event has so many more moving parts.
Entire departments work behind the scenes to make it happen
They need to know the truth on who holds which pencil and where, how the tickets are selling and who is selling them, what marketing activity is being carried out and how it is performing, what the latest costings & settlements are, and what the logistics are for the full tour.
All this information needs to be shared quickly and simply where necessary and securely restricted when it isn’t.
At a glance views should make all your hard-earned data available for quick decisions in one of the fastest paced industries in the entire world.
